Instructions for using Union Plus print ads

In the Union Plus Online Union Leader Section, you can access the following ad files:

  1. JPG files - 72 dpi for quick downloading and previewing Preview Icon

  2. Adobe Acrobat PDFs - 300 dpi for downloading and using in your union publications Download PDF

  3. JPEG files - 300 dpi for downloading and inserting in your union publications JPG Icon

The ads online have been sized for 8 1/2 X 11 publications, but you can resize the 300 dpi files to fit your publication sizes. See instructions below.

Using the PDF files

  • To view the PDFs, you need to have Adobe Acrobat installed. You can download a free copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader here.

If you have purchased the full version of Adobe Acrobat 5.0 (or higher), you can download the PDF and customize it with your union's name.

  • To save a PDF and insert it in your newsletter, right-click on the individual ad (e.g. hover over the PDF icon PDF Icon and then click on the right button of your mouse), then choose "Save Target As" and save the file as appropriate.

  • If you're using Word and cannot insert a PDF file, you can: Click on your selected PDF ad and press the Graphics Select Tool button in the toolbar. Define the copy area by clicking and holding your mouse in the top left corner of the ad and dragging the mouse down to the lower right corner. Release your mouse button and right-click to select "Copy". Then paste the ad into Word.

  • To resize a PDF, open the file in a graphics program such as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator. In Photoshop you can adjust the size of the image before it loads (you will be prompted as the file loads) or after it is open. Once the file is open in Photoshop you can modify the image size by going to the Image menu, select Image Size, and adjusting the size in the dialog box that appears. Then save the file.

To resize the image in Adobe Illustrator, first open the file. Select all of the artwork by going to the Select menu, then choose Select All. Click on a corner handle of the image, hold down the shift key, move mouse inward to reduce in size or outward to increase the file size. Go to the File menu, Document Setup, in the dialog box change the size of the Art Board to match the size of the image. Then save the file.

As a rule of thumb, files should only be resized in proportion to the original size, files should not be increased to exceed twice its original size, and files should not decreased more than half of its original size.

Using the JPG files

  • To save a JPG and insert it in your newsletter, right-click on the individual ad (e.g. hover over the PDF icon PDF Icon and then click on the right button of your mouse), then choose "Save Target As" and save the file as appropriate.

  • To resize a JPG, open the .jpg file and hold down the Shift key, select the image, click on corner handles and move the mouse up or down to resize the image. To maintain the quality of the image and prevent distortion files should only be resized in proportion to the original size, files should not be increased to exceed twice its original size, and files should not decreased more than half of its original size.
